old corys...

...just keep on trucking'
Corydoras paleatus (Peppered Cory)
the three peppered Cory's in this video have  been around. The youngest is 11 years old. It's the offspring of one of the other two, the sibling sisters known as "the girls".  The Girls were at their maximum size when I got them twelve years ago, making them a minimum of 13 years old.

random science 37: Mental Illness and Mass Shootings, some numbers

from an Abstract published February 2015:  Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Politics of American Firearms,
Jonathan M. Metzl, MD, PhD and Kenneth T. MacLeish, PhD (Copyright © American Public Health Association 2015, . 2015 February; 105(2): 240–249.  doi:  10.2105/AJPH.2014.302242   PMCID: PMC4318286)

" ...Yet surprisingly little population-level evidence supports the notion that individuals diagnosed with mental illness are more likely than anyone else to commit gun crimes. According to Appelbaum, less than 3% to 5% of US crimes involve people with mental illness, and the percentages of crimes that involve guns are lower than the national average for persons not diagnosed with mental illness. Databases that track gun homicides, such as the National Center for Health Statistics, similarly show that fewer than 5% of the 120 000 gun-related killings in the United States between 2001 and 2010 were perpetrated by people diagnosed with mental illness."

Update: Meem's house repairs

Go Fund Me Update October 25, 2017:
Work on improving drainage for mosquito control is progressing well.

Meem is a stroke survivor who is forced to spend his waking hours in his wheel chair, watching the world through his front door. He used to be a vibrant young man playing guitar and involved at community functions; now, he is trapped in his home.
His home is badly in need of repair: There is no indoor toilet. The electrical wiring and structural supports are unsafe and need to be upgraded. There is poor drainage, allowing water to pool and mosquitos to flourish. Lastly, the house requires a wheelchair ramp. We have volunteers willing to put in the time and labour, but we need help gathering the funds for materials.
